A slider reveals what a constant controls
In SAT Desmos, enter and add a slider for . Increasing shifts the parabola upward. You can investigate when it crosses, touches, or misses the horizontal axis.
Touching by eye only suggests a value. For exactly one real solution, use . Here , giving and the repeated root . The question asks for the constant , not the root .
One input with different outputs proves two expressions are not equivalent
If two candidate formulas give different outputs at one allowed input, they are not equivalent. Graphing them together or evaluating both at a carefully chosen input can quickly eliminate an answer choice.
Overlapping graphs or a few matching table rows do not prove equality for every input. For example, equals only when . A graph may hide the missing point. Factoring establishes both the simplification and its restriction.
- The original denominator excludes 2.
- The simplified rule has the same outputs only on the original domain.
Know what each constant means in vertex form and slope-intercept form
In with , the vertex is . In , is the slope and is the output at zero. A problem can ask what one coefficient means rather than ask you to solve an equation.
A table and a suitable regression can determine coefficients from enough data. Choose a model that expresses the given structure, and use algebra when the question asks for a condition that must hold for every input.
